Getting Out

Welcome everyone.

We're getting out. Jennifer, Clint and Maia Porritt have officially hit the road and this is a travel-blog of our family's escape from the big city.

Many of you have asked what’s next in our lives—the answer to which is “currently nothing”. Lately we’ve reflected on how our busy and cluttered lives have been at odds with the way of Jesus—too many distractions and way too much stuff. Therefore, we are planning to take a much needed rest from the busyness of life-in-general.

For an undetermined amount of time we are unplugging our lives here in Edmonton and taking to the open road for a period of Sabbath. We’ve sold our home, paid off our debts and re-tired the van. We plan to meander like hippies across Canada—first east, then west—stopping to site-see and people-watch, to camp in many beautiful places and to catch-up with scattered friends and family along the route. We are not leaving Edmonton permanently—at some point, perhaps in the fall, we will return to Edmonton and prepare for whatever adventure God has next in store for us. Until then, we’ll rest.

We expect that approximately half of you may think we’re completely crazy, while perhaps the other half will be almost convinced that maybe you too need a Sabbath. Whatever you’re thinking on the matter we are confident that your thoughts and prayers will go with us wherever we may wander.

DAYS 43 THROUGH 54 - Heading Home

Friday, June 27th through Tuesday, July 8th

I am very aware of being behind on blog posts.  However, since I’m on vacation from guilt and despair, I won’t succumb to it.  Here are some travel-lights from the past 12 days:

  • June 27th — Nova Scotia & New Brunswick.
  • June 28th — Somewhere In Ontario.  Survived an impressive overnight thunderstorm.
  • June 29th — Still Somewhere In Ontario.  After barely navigating through an oppressively hot day, we get stuck in a hotel in Sudbury, Ontario due to a major accident on our only travel route.  We’re not complaining about A/C and a cold pool.
  • June 30th — Thunder Bay, Ontario.  Gramma Kelly has flown into Thunder Bay to see her long-lost traveling grandchild.  It’s great to see family again.
  • July 1st — Still In Thunder Bay, Ontario.  Canada Day has new meaning for us.  We take in some spectacular fireworks on the shores of Lake Superior and also have some not-so-spectacular experiences with some not-so-superior local transit.  (Judging from the groans behind me, I get the feeling my wife doesn’t fully appreciate the profound wittiness of this last sentence).
  • July 2nd — Continuing On In Thunder Bay, Ontario.  The water-pump on the van which (if you die-hard blog fans surely recall) was replaced earlier in Fredericton, New Brunswick has proven faulty.  Thankfully the Canadian Tire in Thunder Bay honors the warranty and is able to make the repair.
  • July 3rd & 4th — Leaving Thunder Bay But Not Ontario.  Another trip to Fort William with Gramma before hitting the road.  We spent two days of recreation (fishing, swimming, canoeing) in a provincial park just before the Manitoba border. Those of us who are light sleepers will remember this park for its planes, trains, and automobiles—what were they thinking?
  • July 5th — Winnipeg, Manitoba.  Driver suffering from a lack of sleep means catching a hotel in poor old Winnipeg.
  • July 6 & 7th — Near Russell, Manitoba.  An awful overnight thunderstorm resulted in a day getting really wet and a day getting dried out at Assissippi Provinical Park in Manitoba.  It was a very pleasant surprise to run into some friends from Edmonton at a local restaurant.
  • July 8th — Dodsland, Saskatchewan.  A quick stop-over at Jennifer’s grandparents.  It’s almost impossible to believe that tomorrow we will be back in Edmonton!
